In the commemoration of International Women’s Day 8 March 2024, the Alliance for Land Rights South Sudan – ALRSS brought together Women and Men in Wau Western Bahr el Ghazal State, to commemorate the day with a round table discussion on the promotion and protection of women’s land rights. The participants were drawn from the five (5) Blocks of Wau Municipal mainly chiefs, Block Administrators, Women, Youth, and representatives from the Ministries of Gender, Child and Social Welfare, Housing and Public Utility, Local Government, Law and Enforcement Agencies, Peace Building, and members of Civil Society Organizations.
In her remark, the representative from the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare of Western Bahr State calls on women to speak up for themselves on the issues that affect them in the community and be part of the development in the state, she acknowledges the work that ALRSS is doing in the community special to the vulnerable women.
Another participant acknowledges that women’s voices are being heard in some communities citing that women who are part of the local court in the communities are doing a lot and their voices are being heard but more is needed to be done. However, she urges the government and the humanitarian partners to do more awareness in the community on women’s land rights.
The event was commemorated under the global theme: ‘Investing in women: Accelerate progress” and the local theme: “Accelerate Gender Equality through Inclusive and Access to Resources for Women and Girls”
